Florida School of the Arts presents exhibition for local artists Moser, Myhre and Maycumber
As part of the visiting artist series, Florida School of the Arts will present a gallery exhibition for local artists and Flagler College colleagues Patrick Moser, Loren Myhre and Russell Maycumber. The exhibit will open with a reception on Thursday, October 20 at 7:00 p.m. in the Fine Arts Gallery located on St. Johns River State College’s Palatka campus.
According to Florida School of the Arts Gallery Coordinator Sarah Alexander, the exhibit will include paintings, drawings and sculptures which can be described as playful, inventive and unexpected. The works include themes such as death and parenthood, meaning and the human experience, and limitations. “The artists manage to tackle serious themes with an attitude of somewhat comical naivete, thereby transcending their own limitations,” Alexander said.
An associate professor of painting and drawing at Flagler College, Patrick Moser describes his recent works as “something about being a child, a father, seeing death and trying to play past it.” His works have been published in periodicals such as the National Forum Magazine, New American Paintings, and the Sarasota Arts Review, and can be found in collections from New York to Sarasota.
Loren Myhre is an adjunct art professor at Flagler College. Myhre said his recent paintings and sculptures have revolved around a series of rules and boundaries established in the creation of the works. “Predetermined shapes, materials and color dictate my practice and challenge how one can find invention within limited means,” said Myhre. “The outcome in the work is not reductive, but rather reflects restraint and resists garnish.” His works can be found in private collections from Las Vegas to New York.
Flagler College art faculty member and alumnus Russell Maycumber said he is attracted to the simplicity of drawing and makes things in an effort to understand himself. “I think I am looking for a dialog, a sounding board,” said Maycumber. “For me, a brush and water-based carbon black ink are a very natural choice for finding that place where images can quickly build into conversations.” He has exhibited in galleries in north Florida and Seattle, Washington.
The exhibit will be on display through November 10, 2011. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Gallery exhibits are free and open to the public.
